RESOLUTION CALLING FOR ENDING THE WAR IN SRI LANKA

 

 

 

WHEREAS the Sinhala people and the Tamil people have been living on the island currently known as Sri Lanka for well over 2000 years, and had their own separate kingdoms until the European invasion, and

 

WHEREAS war between the Sinhalese and Tamil people has been going on for more than 30 years and many tens of thousands of  people have been killed in this struggle, and;

 

WHEREAS the government of Sri Lanka and the Tamil parties have so far failed to resolve the Tamil issue and failed to come up with credible political alternatives while the death, destruction and suffering of all the peoples of Sri Lanka continues;

 

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED  that the Santa Clara County Democratic Party supports the United Nation’s Secretary General  Ban Ki-moon’s recent call for an end to the conflict in Sri Lanka and urges the United States Government to fully support efforts by the United Nations and other concerned agencies and countries to end this tragic conflict, and;

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the United States Government should continue its efforts to promote a fair and just agreement between the Sinhalese and Tamil peoples of Sri Lanka that would guarantee full and equal political rights and social equality for all.
