Eliminate the Gaps in Social and Racial Equality
Whereas, Hurricane Katrina
and the Flood of New Orleans laid bare the unjust struggles that the poorest
and weakest among us endure daily, and have endured and are enduring following
the Hurricane and the Flood in measures that are abhorrent to a just and
compassionate society, and,
Whereas, the enormity of this
human suffering is caused to a significant extent by class and race inequality
of opportunity, which we, in the proud and long Democratic tradition, have
vowed to eradicate, and,
Whereas, the Republican President
and the Republican Congress have shown themselves to be unwilling and incapable
of resolving these issues of every widening inequality, and even when promising
to deal with such concerns in his address to the nation following Hurricane
Katrina, the Republican President referred to these issues as “regional” and
provided solutions that were highly inadequate, now therefore, be it
Resolved that, we will strongly
encourage and support our representatives at all levels of government to take
bold and forceful action to eliminate the gaps in social and racial inequality,
and be it further
Resolved that, we will redouble
our efforts as a Party to sound the clarion call to make our society one of
true equal opportunity and of compassion to those least powerful among us.
