Report to SCCDCC – October 7, 2004

In spite of early morning rain and sprinkles while we set up for our annual barbeque and picnic on Sunday, Sept.19, more than 100 brave souls attended to hear and meet our speakers:  Peg Pinard, Simon Salinas, Joe Coto, Craig Mann, and Enrique Colin.  Ten New members joined, giving us a total of 224.  One of the new members was a former Republican who had just re-registered.  Fortunately, the threat of rain did not become a reality and a great time was had by one and all.

Our October meeting, originally scheduled for the evening, was moved back to 3 pm due to the Vice Presidential Debate.  Following a brief meeting, a 13 minute DVD on Stem Cell Research – YES o Prop 71 was show, followed by the documentary “OutFoxed.”

Our November meeting falls on Election Day.  We will meet at 6 pm for a light super, watch the returns, and have a victory celebration.

Club members continue to volunteer for Voter Registration at the Oakridge Mall and on Sat., Oct. 16 at Dave Cortese’s “Day in the Park” at Cunningham Park.  We’ve collected more than $200 for UDC from donations for buttons and bumper stickers.  Members are also volunteering at the Almaden Rd. Democratic Headquarters.

We will be distributing our newsletter in a couple of weeks to about 1300 registered Democrats in the Village, with campaign literature and info on Propositions.  We learned that Democrats in the Villages have risen and numbers of Republicans has fallen.

Our next SCCDC meeting will be Monday, Oct 18, at Carrow’s Restaurant on El Camino in Santa Clara. Several e-board members will make presentations on the various propositions that will be on the Nov. 2 ballot. Dinner begins at 6 p.m. and the program begins at 7 p.m.

The SCCDC is continuing to register voters at Westfield’s Valley Fair Mall each 3rd weekend of the month during 2004 ... for October; we’ll also be at Valley Fair on the 2nd Saturday. We also had a voter registration booth at the Santa Teresa CommunityFest. One of the handouts for the CommunityFest and for our other voter registration events will be these Kerry-Edwards flags.

Our annual summer barbeque was held in August at Serra Park in Sunnyvale. We had quite a few local candidates and officeholders speak and also had an auction of several souvenir items from the Democratic National Convention donated by delegate and club member Alyson Abramowitz..

Our next big event – our annual holiday party – is scheduled for December 7 with the place and speakers still to be determined. But please save this date.

On your public access TV station, look for these upcoming StraightTalk shows. One will be of Assemblywoman Loni Hancock, of Berkley, about her plans to re-introduce Clean Money reform legislation into the California Assembly next year. Also, Jay Laefer, vice chair of the SCC chapter of the ACLU, spoke to the club in September and a videotape of that presentation is being edited for Straight Talk.

Finally, the club made contributions last month to several candidates that we endorsed recently. These include Enrique Colin, Jamie MacLeod and Nancy Pyle and Peg Pinard.  The club endorsed and made contributions to several other candidates earlier this year.
