Patrick Kwok

Peter Arellano

Claude Ezran

Tamara Logan

Peter Drekmeier

Endorsement meetings were held for 9 races and were held on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of this week. The recommendations were:

Cupertino Union School District: 3 seats open, 2 Democrats running, recommend dual endorsement of Pearl Chang and Gary McCue who are incumbents

Palo Alto Unified School District: 4 candidates, 2 seats open, 2 Democrats, Dana Tom and Claude Ezran, recommend dual

Los Altos School District: 8 candidates, 5 Democrats, 2 opted out of being interviewed, 3 seats open, recommend: Francis La Poll and Tamara Logan

Sunnyvale School District: 4 candidates, 3 open seats, 3 Democrats running, recommend Jeff Arnette, Wendy Bockholt, and Anita Herrmann

Foothill-De Anza Community College District: 4 candidates , 2 open recommend Paul Fong and Julia Miller

Gilroy City Council: 2 Democrats running, 5 candidates, 3 open seats, recommend Charles Morales and Peter Arellano

Sunnyvale City Council:

Seat 3: 2 Democrats, recommend John Howe

Seat 1: 2 candidates, 1 Democrat, recommend Tony Spitaleri

Seat 2: recommend no endorsement

Cupertino City Council: 6 Candidates, 3 positions, recommend: Patrick Kwok, Dolly Sandoval, Marty Miller

Palo Alto City Council: 9 Democrats, 8 chose to be interviewed, recommend John Barton and Peter Drekmeier

Recommend calendar as a consent calendar: Motion to approve, second, pull Sunnyvale seat 2, Cupertino City Council, Foothill/DeAnza, Palo Alto City Council

Motion to approve slate after pulled races, second, carried

Foothill/DeAnza School Board: Herb Engstrom: expressed concern that the voter registration records indicate that Paul Fong was a registered Republican 2 years ago. James Kim: disputes that he was a Republican. Steve Chessin pointed out that Herb had the wrong Paul Fong. The addresses were compared and Herb apologized for his mistake.

Bill James: spoke in favor of a no endorsement apart from endorsing Paul Fong. Would be disappointed to see Julia Miller endorsed over Laura Casas Frier. Jon Kessler: response: the Foothill board already has 2 residents from Palo Alto on the board and the endorsement committee would like to see more diverse geographic representation. Additionally, Laura did not have in depth knowledge of the issues of the Foothill/DeAnza School Board. Hope Cahan: When there are two qualified female candidates,  I cannot support not endorsing one if not both female candidates  and would be disappointed to report to the Silicon Valley Women’s Caucus that the Central Committee chose not to endorse either simply because they could not decide to endorse one over the other. Additional discussion on.

Motion to support the two candidates recommended by the endorsement committee (takes 2/3 of the County Committee votes), 27 in favor, 7 opposed, motion passes

Xavier Campos: supported half of the motion. He was in support of endorsing Paul Fong, but was in support of a no endorsement of any other candidate.

Sunnyvale Seat 2: Brandon Sulser: Chris Moylan is on the planning commission with Brandon. Chris has proven to be a liberal Democrat by his activities on the commission. Herb Engstrom: SCCDClub has been backing finance reform. On the questionnaire, Chris Moylan answered in support of finance reform and was one of the only candidates to have a firm answer in favor of it. Kevin Moore: also supports Chris Moylan. Jim Beall: served on the transportation commission with Chris for 5 years. He is very thorough in his research on issues and has the values of a good Democrat.

Jacquie and Ann: were concerned about the way that he presented himself to the endorsement committee. Neither candidate appeared to follow the Democratic Party values.

Emy Thurber: thought his questionnaire and his values were good

Steve Preminger: The group had a number of concerns with the answers on his questionnaire.

Those in favor of committee’s recommendation: 26 supported, opposed: 11

Cupertino City Council: motion to approve, carried

Palo Alto City Council: David Cohen: was impressed by Yoriko Kishimoto last time she ran for office and am surprised that we are not endorsing her again.

Steve Preminger: The committee did not endorse other candidates because we felt very strongly about 2 of the candidates and wanted to put more muscle behind the endorsement.

Anne: Yoriko Kishimoto was not as strong on Democratic issues as some of the other candidates and 4 years ago she said she was going to get more involved in the Party, however, has not done so.

Claudia: Yoriko Kishimoto has not dealt with core Democratic issues well such as helping the workers in Palo Alto to get a contract. She is in a position to act upon our values and has not done so.

Jacquie: There were other candidates that she wanted to endorse such as Karen Holman, she was very strong on women’s issues and other core Democratic values.

Herb: Karen Holman’s response to the finance questions was that contributions were in correlation to free speech.

Deepka: interviewed Yoriko Kishimoto for another organization and believes she has the Democratic values.

Motion to approve endorsement committee’s recommendation so carried.

Hurricane Katrina: Ana Maria Rosato discussed the Santa Clara coalition for Katrina relief fund. The coalition is having a fundraiser on September 11th at 4:00pm and an organizing meeting tomorrow night at 5:00pm. Please join the coalition in raising money for the survivors of this disastrous hurricane.

Emergency Resolution:

To the victims of Hurricane Katrina our deepest sympathy for all of your suffering and our heartfelt hopes for an early and complete recovery. We encourage all Democratic organizations to donate to survivor relief.

Motion to approve, second, so carried

Resolution supporting SB596:  Steve Chessin

Presentation of the resolution:

> Resolution supporting SB596

>

> Whereas, the California Democratic Party platform calls for exploring > alternative election systems, such as instant runoff voting (IRV); and

>

> Whereas, the use of IRV in San Francisco in November 2004 was a > resounding success according to practically all observers, with an > overwhelming majority of voters surveyed preferring IRV over the old > system, and with the overwhelming majority of voters understanding IRV, > and with the overwhelming majority of voters finding IRV easy to use, > and finally with the majority of voters using IRV effectively; and

>

> Whereas, the Santa Clara County Democratic Central Committee has > already taken a position supporting the use of IRV in all single-winner > elections at all levels of government, including the election of > presidential electors; and

>

> Whereas, Senator Debra Bowen’s legislative bill SB596 provides local > jurisdictions such as cities, counties, special districts, etc. the > option of using Instant Runoff Voting for their elections, but does not > mandate that any jurisdiction use an alternative voting system;

>

> Therefore be it resolved that the Santa Clara County Democratic Central > Committee supports SB596, and

>

> Therefore be it further resolved that the Santa Clara County Democratic > Central Committee so inform our elected representatives in the State > Legislature of our support, and encourage them to support SB596 as > well.

Motion to support the resolution, second, so carried

C.      Vice Chair:  James Kim

Thank you to the candidates for being here and hope that you will become involved in the party. And congratulations to Buu Thai for her appointment to the Franklin McKinley School District

F.       Community Services and Voter Registration: Carolyn Curtis

Carolyn passed around picture taken at the Palo Alto Art and Wine Festival. There is a sign up sheet for Mountain View and the Tapestry and Talent.

Please remember that 10% of the population move every year and we need to get those people registered. Additionally, we have a bounty program in action right now.

We have had many successful festivals this year and there are more to come. It would be great if more clubs took charge of specific festivals on a consistent basis.

Adrienne Grey: took in 181 voter registration and $521 so far. There are many farmers markets that still need to be covered. The Stop Arnold fans have been a huge hit and have a voter guide on the back. Still need volunteers for Tapestry. However, please remember to also volunteer on Madison’s campaign.

G.      Finance:  Jim Thurber

Explained that we use the money collected from the bounty program to pay for voter registration booths in order to get better placement in fairs and festivals, and to order buttons and bumper stickers.

I.      Communication: David Cohen

If you want an event to appear on the online calendar, please fill it out yourself through our website.

I am putting together a team of people to update our collateral documents on the website. Please see me if you are interested in joining this effort.

J.        Campaign Services:  Philip Bump

District 7 campaign is in need of volunteers. If each person in this room walked one shift, we could get hundreds of people to vote for Madison Ngyuen. This will be a low turn out race, so every vote is extremely important. The poll numbers show that Madison could lose this race, if this happens, this will be the first Democratic candidate for San Jose City Council endorsed by the SCCDCC to lose in a long time.

K.       Issues:  Herb Engstrom

Sent out invitations to our electeds to speak at our meetings: Zoe Lofgren, Joe Coto, and Ira Ruskin have responded so far.

L.       Political Outreach: Tom Cochran

New Chartered club: Milpitas Democratic Club. Motion to approve the club, second, so carried.

Madison’s campaign really needs your help.

The SCCDCC needs donations for our federal funds account.

Thank you to PDC for providing the refreshments.

Milpitas Democratic Club

President Deepka Lalwani discussed the club. Are having the club’s first event on September 19th at 6:30 at Sarovar Indian Cuisine at 301 S. Abbott in Milpitas. The cost is $15 per person.

Evergreen Democratic Club:  Beverly Waller-Wharton

On hiatus for the month of August, the Club had no meeting. We are gearing up for our annual BBQ on Sunday, September 18th at the Villages Gazebo Park. We expect a goodly supply of elected officials and candidates to speak briefly and to mix and mingle. We are expecting all three mayoral candidates for our Tuesday, October 11th meeting, extending an invitation to all interested Villagers to attend.

President Applebaum and wife Roz just returned from a vacation in Taos Pueblo and Santa Fe, New Mexico where they met Tom, an active member of Veterans for Peace, who had just returned from Crawford, Texas. He related to Bob and Roz a brief, but powerful, moment while many locals were delivering tents, food, and supplies for the demonstrators at Camp Casey. On catching a glance from the local Sheriff, though no words were spoken, Tom noted tears in the Sheriff’s eyes. He was obviously touched at the sight of all the activity and donations, but always professional in doing his job to ensure that the roads were kept clear.

Santa Clara County Democratic Club (SCCDC): Alicia Lanier

I want to thank everyone who attended 24th annual summer barbeque on August 28. Two California Assemblymembers and a dozen other elected officials and candidates were among the 70 or so Democrats at the event at Vasona Lake County Park in Los Gatos. The Hon. Rebecca Cohn, Assemblymember from AD 24, and the Hon. Ira Ruskin, Assemblymember from AD 21, spoke to the gathering before lunch and stressed the need to get out the vote for the special election in November and to defeat ballot measures supported by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Our Straight Talk TV crew recorded four shows this month: 1) California State Insurance Commissioner John Garamendi’s speech to the Rotary Club on Workers' Comp and Health Care; 2) "Holocaust Survivors" with Bob Jacobvitz and Hurst Sommer; 3) San Jose mayoral candidate Chuck Reed on "open Government"; and 4) Dolores Huerta of the United Farm Workers. Look for these on the Club web site early next week and on your local public access TV stations in the coming month.

In September, Assemblywoman Sally Lieber will speak at our regular monthly meeting which is held on the 3rd Monday at Carrow’s Restaurant on El Camino in Santa Clara. We gather for dinner at 6 o’clock and the program starts at 7 o’clock.

The SCCDC is sponsoring three voter registration tabling events in September: September 17 from 11 to 5 at the annual Santa Teresa Community Fest; and on September 24, from 10 to 6 at Valley Fair Mall; and on September 25, from 11-5 at Valley Fair Mall. Volunteers are needed for each event and we welcome you to sign up by emailing president@DemocraticClub-SCC.org

SCCDC is proud to be sponsoring and supporting the DAWN brunch and fund-raiser on September 25.

We thank John McLemore, SCCDC member from Santa Clara, for representing the club on the endorsements committee of the SCC Democratic Party.

The SCCDC has donated $100 to the American Red Cross for their 2005 Hurricane Relief efforts.

O.      Pro-Choice Coalition:  Claudia Shope

The “Parental Notification Initiative” Proposition 73, which is on the November 8th special election ballot, is a serious, yet not widely televised, initiative that deserves much attention. The initiative would require a doctor to notify a legal guardian if their minor is requesting an abortion 48 hours before she is scheduled for the abortion. Also, this initiative would require doctors to report abortions and then keep statistics.

Last week, a poll was taken by the “Public Policy Institute of California” and 48% opposed the initiative. 44% agree with the proposition, around 8% are undecided. James Holman, who owns the weekly San Diego Reader, Don Sebastiani, who is a former Assemblyman and Sonoma vintner, and Tom Monaghan, who is the founder of Domino’s Pizza put the initiative on the ballot. Those who are opponents of the proposition include Planned Parenthood, The California Medical Association, the California Nurses Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics District IX, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists District IX, the League of Women Voters of California, and millions of parents, as well as many others.

Emergency Contraception: On August 26th, the US Food and Drug Administration announced a 60 day delay on the decision to make Plan B emergency contraception or EC available over the counter. PPFA is outraged. There is now going to be an online advertisement issued by PPFA saying that EC is still available via prescriptions and at Panned Parenthood clinics. Estimates have been made that if EC did become available over the counter, 1.7 million unintended pregnancies and 800,000 abortions per year would be prevented. Statistics prove this need for EC. In 1995, 17,270 EC kits were distributed. By 2003, 774,482 EC kits were dispersed. This was an increase of 4,484 % in eight years! In 2003 the FDA Nonprescription Drugs and Reproductive Health Drugs Advisory Committees voted in favor of making EC over the counter and available to every woman no matter her age. Over the counter EC is also supported by many medical groups such as the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Society for Adolescent Medicine. It is extremely important to make EC over the counter since it is used only within the first 120 hours of unprotected sexual intercourse. Senators Clinton and Murray had mandated a set date for the status of over the counter EC or they were to continue to block the nomination of Lester Crawford to the position of the FD commissioner. The Human Health and Services Secretary Michael Leavitt then assured the Senators that they would receive a decision from the FDA by September 1, which resulted in the Senators lifting the block.

Judge John Roberts Nomination: Feinstein said she intends to query Roberts on “abortion and congressional authority to set social policy” at his confirmation hearings, set to begin September 6th.

“As the only woman on the committee, I have n additional role to play in representing the views and concerns of 145 million American women during this hearing process,” she said.

“The nomination of John Roberts raises serious questions and grave concerns for women’s health and safety. It is particularly troubling that Roberts went on the record calling Roe v. Wade to be overturned when he served as a lawyer for the government,” said Karen Pearl, interim president of PPFA

SB644 Update: Unfortunately, Senate Bill 644, which would bar a pharmacist from refusing to dispense a lawful prescription, was not heard on Monday, August 29th in the State Assembly as anticipated. We anticipate it will be heard next week, and then it will go to the Governor’s desk for his signature. Planned Parenthood is actively engaging its clients to sign letters to the Governor in support of this bill.
