a.     Motion to approve with correction of Agenda date from June 4 to July 3, 2009; correction from Herb Engstrom to VanDeVeer regarding hosting a club training on August 29.

b.     Motion Approved; Seconded; Motion Carried.

 

b)   June 4, 2009 Minutes Ð No Action to be taken on June minutes.  Minutes to be posted on September 2, 2009 Agenda.

 

6.        NEW BUSINESS

a.   Jacquie Heffner Ð Health Care Debate.

                              i.         Action Plan.  Many senior citizens are going to Town Hall meetings that are not aware that Medicare is a government-funded healthcare program.

                                ii.         Has requested that attendees attend Town Hall meetings of CongressmembersSam Farr, Pete Stark and Jackie Speiers.

                                 iii.         Suggested attendees contact their legislature and inform them that they are in favor of the healthcare reform.

                                 iv.         Herb Engstrom informed attendees that the Obama administration has changed the Terminology within last 2 weeks Ð Now saying Health Insurance Reform rather than Healthcare Reform.

a.     Candidate Endorsement Interview Dates Ð Made an appeal for members to serve on endorsement committee.  Anyone interested is to contact Jon Kessler.

a.      Endorsements Ð Endorsement schedule will be posted on the SCCDC website calendar.  David requested programmer assistance with SCCDC website.  New calendar will be posted on SCCDC website in September, which will enable clubs to post information.

j.      Campaign Services:  Tom Cochran

a.      Urged attendees to get involved in upcoming campaigns.

k.     Political Outreach (Clubs):  Diane Rolfe

a.      Herb Engstrom Ð Club Training.  Distributed Democratic Club Training flyer.  Democratic Council will be having their annual convention in San Diego on September 26 and 27.  Will be holding endorsements for Statewide races.  Thanked APA DemClub for furnishing food.

l.      Regional Director:  Emy Thurber

a.      July Ð State E-Board meeting was successful.  Programs were fantastic and one of the objectives was to elect democrats at all levels.  The CalDem.org training schedule was distributed to attendees.  The training is for 2 days and is also free.  Copies of the Democrat Resource Guide (what the party can provide to members) were made available to attendees.  Emy Thurber stated that funds were needed to support the training program.  Monthly donations to the State party can be made on the website.  Regional meeting to review/revise the State party platform will be held on October 10 from 9-12 at the Los Altos Center.

b.     State Party is putting out talking points and bulletins to keep everyone up-to-date.  Informed attendees they could sign-up to obtain updates.  Individuals are to contact the State Party Office if they experience problems in accessing the bulletins.

c.      The next E-Board meeting will be held mid-November.

n.     Pro-Choice Coalition:  Claudia Shope

a.      Guest speaker David Ginsberg Ð Deputy to the Santa Clara County Assessor.  September guest TBD.

p.     CDC Report:  Jay Jackman

a.      CDC enrollment forms were distributed and was requested they be completed and returned this evening.  Leadership Training will be held on September 29 and will be solely directed to the welfare of clubs. The CDC is committed to have a club available to everyone in the state and is not related to a State or County party agenda.

 

10.     ANNOUNCEMENTS

a.      Peter Allen Ð Zoe Lofgren Annual BBQ is Sunday, August 9 from 1-4 at the San Jose History Park.  Health Insurance Debate will be held on August 9.

b.     Chris Moylan, Sunnyvale City Councilmember, informed attendees he was running for re-election.

b.     Dan Hoffman Ð Sonya Sotamayor was confirmed as Supreme Court Justice.  The Senate passed Cash for Clunkers and is now going to the President for signature.  Voter registration will be held on August 8 and 9 at the Jazz Festival, interested volunteers are to contact Wanda Bryan.  Mary Greenwood will be speaking before the Campbell Area AARO at the Campbell Community Center on August 18 at 9:30 Ð 11:30.  WomenÕs Equality Day Reception will be held at the Tritan Museum in Santa Clara on August 26 from 5:30-7:30, Ann Ravel will be guest speaker.  Thanked Emy Thurber to let her much she is appreciated.

Club Reports:

PDC:  Annual PDC picnic will be held on August 22 at Shaw Park in Los Altos at 5:00.  Cost:  $5 and a dish to share.  August 12 Ð Guest Speaker will be Sally Lieber at Chef ChuÕs in Mountain View.

 

South County DemClubÐ Next meeting will be Saturday at 10:00 at the Village Green Retirement Facility in Gilroy.  Representatives will talk about the Obama health reform.  The Annual fundraiser will be held on September 12 from 1-4 in Gilroy.  Congressman Jerry McNerney will be making an appearance and Assemblyman Bill Monning will be the guest speaker.

 

Bay Area Iranian DemClub:  The next meeting will be held on August 12 in Cupertino at 6:30.  Guest speaker will be Dr. Ali Ferdose, Chair of History in NotreDame, who will be speaking about the election in Iran.  Event will be held at the Quinlan Center Social Room in Cupertino.

 

Santa Clara County DemClub:  A pot-luck dinner will be held on August 28 at the Santa Clara Railroad Museum in Santa Clara.  Jay James submitted a letter of resignation as President.  Vice President, Aldyth Parle, will assume responsibility until the November election.

 

Bay Area for Change Ð On August 19 at VitoÕs Restaurant, a panel discussion will be held on the topics of Bay Area Housing and the Mortgage Crisis.  Voter Registration will be done at the Tapestry Festival in September.

 

Obama DemClub:  Last week the club held a celebration for President ObamaÕs birthday.  Next meeting will be on September 8.  A couple of members are going to Fresno to do voter registration.

 

Dean DemClub:  The Annual Garden Party was held at Greg LoewÕs residence for Assemblyman Ira Ruskin.  A Howard Dean fundraiser was held in July at Jay JackmanÕs residence.  Voter registration will be done at the San Jose Jazz Festival on August 8 and 9, the Palo Alto Art and Wine Festival on August 22 and 23 and also at the California Avenue FarmerÕs Market on Sundays.  Next meeting will be August 17.

 

Silicon Valley Young Dems:  Barbara Boxer will be at the StevenÕs Creek Barnes & Noble on August 15 for a book signing.  Friend-working Event will be held on August 13 at Billy Burks with Cindy Chavez as the guest speaker.  The Club created a team for the AIDS Walk for Silicon Valley.

 

DAWN:  An event, which will be focused on membership, will be held on September 12 in Gilroy.

 

Silicon Valley DemClub:  Registered 31 new voters at the Santa Clara County Fair.  The club will be participating in the endorsement process and are currently finalizing the endorsement questionnaire.

 

21st Century Club:  Next luncheon will be August 14 with guest speaker, Peggy Moore, Political Director of Obama for America.  She will be describing the community organizing that was done during the last election; State Treasurer Bill Lokyer will be the guest speaker at the September meeting.  Cost of lunch:  $25.

 

Latino Forum Ð The 7th Annual Fundraiser will be held at The Loft in San Jose on August 21 from 6:00 to 9:00.  Cost:  $35 which includes membership.  Voter registration will be done at the Salsa Festival from 12-6 on August 22.

 

Milpitas DemClub Ð Next meeting will be August 12.  A Town Hall Meeting will be held on August 29 with guest speaker Assemblyman Albert Torrico.
