Urges everyone to continue to fight the recall, as it negatively affects services   Unfortunately, the Nuremberg files (a website hit lists against doctors) are still in existence.

O.  DTV Report:  Steve Chessin

P.  CDC Report:  David Wilkes This year is the 50th anniversary of the CDC.  We celebrated by having our convention in Fresno, the site of the first CDC convention. It was nice to have a larger Bay Area contingent there.

The major speakers at the convention were Congressman Dennis Kucinich, former Congressman Jim McDermott of Washington (who is also a psychiatrist), and State Senator Joseph Dunn.

Jim Clarke was reelected president; Chris Stampolis as secretary, David Wilkes as Trustee North. Herb Engstrom is the new regional VP.

The workshops were:
-Healthcare, which was mainly about SB921, the single payer bill. They were for it.
-Energy. No surprise. The report supported re-regulation, hybrid vehicles, alternative energy tax credits, and the indictment of Ken Lay. The report was against federal support of nuclear plants.
-Electronic voting. Dennis Paul went over the opportunities and problems. The problems seem to outweigh the good points at this time.
-Economic security.
-Three strikes.
-Transportation
-Medical Marijuana

Chris Stampolis did a morning session on club building and an afternoon session on finance and fundraising.  He was in favor of both.

Important comments:
Evict the liars club!
If its not single payer, its not universal.
Bush accepts responsibility for what he said, but he has no idea what it means.
Invading small countries is not a good strategic plan.

Recall:
Have your own elevator speech ready.
Points:
The energy crisis and the economy are not Davis fault.
The Republicans do not have a program; they are just spoilers.
Recalls will snowball.
It is a misuse of the recall process.
It is antidemocratic: Someone can win with only a small percent of the vote.
It is a waste of money.
Davis kept the lights on; don’t put us in the dark now.
He defended overtime.
He expanded Healthy Families.
He increased funds for education.
He increased Workers Compensation and Minimum Wage.

Greetings:
Bernie Gold sends his regards; he is living in Fresno now.

Bustamante’s name to appear on the ballot, that he be well-financed to campaign against the recall, to educate the public about the dangers of this recall process, and also to bring an emergency legal case to the US Supreme court to review the constitutionality of the 1911 law. The speaker for our August 5th meeting was Jennifer Farris, Field Representative for Assemblymember Diaz. 8. OLD BUSINESS Call To Action Reports

The Speakers Bureau has been hard at work on the speakers training and survey. Additionally, they are looking for contacts in organizations that may have events in which they would like our speakers to speak.

The media committee has been working hard on the creation of an electronic newsletter for the website and in assisting the other committees.

Working with the other committees to provide good material and messages. Always seeking new members for this committee, please contact David if you are interested.

Have been working hard to coordinate with the other committees. The addition of the volunteer sign up toggle on the website has resulted in a number of new volunteers. We have created literature for use at the voter registration booths and are coordinating with clubs for increased volunteerism. We are still looking for volunteers for the San Jose Jazz Festival.

9. NEW BUSINESS
Recall Update

Madge: The State Party focus is on the media and the cost of the recall, over $100 million from local governments. There is going to be a large vote by mail program push with a focus on LA, San Bernandino, San Diego, etc. The Party is urging the local community members to sign up as poll watchers and volunteers. Additionally, because of short amount of time many Counties, including Santa Clara County, will have to use the old paper ballots. Donations may be sent to:  Californians against the costly recall: 911 W. Pico Blvd LA 90035 No on recall and no on prop 54.

Phaedra: Discussed the AFL-CIO Convention in Chicago. This was a convention of all of the Presidents of all of the Unions and they discussed strategy recommendations. The Labor movement opposes the recall and will support Gray. They made a commitment to raise $10 million to use for mailing, walking, and phone calling against the recall.
