There were still 8 candidates for the Democratic nomination for President and we still had another year of Bush's presidency ahead of us. Now that the year is coming to a close, things have gotten worse across America, but there is an optimism that President-elect Obama can chart a new course and lead a national recovery. Locally, Democrats continue our electoral success, with victories up and down the ticket. From two new San Jose City Councilmembers to a gain of three seats in the California Assembly, voters have entrusted Democrats to lead in this time of crisis. We appreciate the tremendous support of all our volunteers. Without your time and financial contributions, we could not have been as successful as we were. We all look forward to January 20, when Barack Obama is inaugurated as the 44th President of the United States. There will be a large local inauguration party. Information will be sent out when details are available. Also, check our calendar for more on upcoming events. In the meantime, we want to pass along important news. We wish everyone the best in the New Year. California Democratic Party Assembly District Delegate Elections The California Democratic Party is run by delegates from all over the state. Those delegates include 12 people elected from each Assembly District. The Assembly District delegates (6 men and 6 women) are elected at AD caucuses that will be held during the weekend of January 10 and 11. Any registered Democrat is eligible to be a candidate. In order to run, you must fill out an application by noon on December 31. Complete information on the process and the online application are available on the California Democratic Party website. Seven Assembly Districts are located in Santa Clara County and details on the caucus meetings for each of these can be found here. Support Councilwoman Madison Nguyen's Fight Against Recall The Santa Clara County Democratic Party expressed its support for San Jose Councilwoman Madison Nguyen at the Dec. 4 Central Committee meeting. Madison Nguyen is a strong advocate for progressive values and has served District 7 with honor and integrity. She has well represented the core values of social justice, service to others, and open and accountable government shared by President-elect Barack Obama, the Santa Clara County Democratic Party, and our many affiliated clubs and associations. We support elected leaders who favor common sense over ideology and bring a sense of intelligence and dignity to the political sphere. A recall election is being held on March 3. Help Madison Nguyen defeat the recall by volunteering or contributing to her campaign. Updates on the campaign will be posted at sccdp.org and our blog. Save the Date - Annual Democratic Dinner The Democratic Party Dinner is the biggest event of the year for the Santa Clara County Democratic Party. Mark your calendar for April 17. The 2009 dinner will be a grand celebration of all that we have accomplished and an opportunity to recharge for the battles ahead. The dinner will be held at the Fairmont Hotel in downtown San Jose. Tickets remain $125 each. Ticket sales and sponsorship opportunities will be available in January. Central Committee Swearing In The Santa Clara County Democratic Central Commitee is made up of 6 delegates from each of the 7 Assembly Districts in the County. These delegates were elected in the June 2008 primary election for a two year term that begins in January 2009. Come see the swearing in of the new Central Committee on Thursday, January 8, at 7:00 pm at the County Building, 70 W Hedding St. The complete agenda of the January 8 meeting will be available online. Humor Break During the holiday season, who is really serving as President? In reality, there is an excruciating wait before Obama can take over: In the meantime, Bush is trying to cement a legacy without taking blame for anything. Everybody is hurting this Christmas season: The car companies need help, but their technology had been a bit behind: At least Bush won't be getting a severance package:
