The New Democrat movement emerged as a means to modernize the progressive tradition in politics, and its followers espouse bipartisanship and moderate thinking, which has alienated some of the Democratic Party’s left-leaning members. Bayh is a leader of the New Democrat movement and is spearheading the creation of the Third Way, an organization designed to build consensus around legislation that would otherwise remain bogged down in the political turf wars. Before his election to the Senate, Bayh served two terms as governor of Indiana. Bayh will explain the New Democrat movement’s goals and outline a course of action to bring cooperation and progressivism back to politics. Introduced by Larry Stone, Santa Clara County Assessor.

The July Century Club luncheon will feature Assemblyman John Laird from Santa Cruz. Elected in 2002 to represent the 27th Assembly District, John has
established himself as one of the most important and influential members of the Assembly. In December, he was appointed by Speaker Fabian Nunez to chair the Budget Committee and will speak to us about the budget and other matters of interest. He's been on the front lines in Sacramento and will provide insight into what we can expect in the tumultuous months ahead. Lunch begins at noon. Because space is limited and this will be a very popular event, we ask that you RSVP to Emy/Jim Thurber at thurber@sccdp.org. As usual, the luncheon will be as usual at Lou's Village, 1465 W. San Carlos Street, San Jose. Lunch is $20. You can pay at the door by cash or check.
Assemblyman Laird has had a distinguished public career serving as a Cabrillo College Trustee, a Santa Cruz City Councilman and two terms as Mayor. During his first term in the Assembly, he authored 30 bills signed by the Governor and was one of only 5 freshman assigned to chair a major policy committee, Environmental Safety and Toxic Materials.
