Dr. McNerney is running an energetic and effective campaign against incumbent Richard Pombo ("eco-thug"—Sierra Club), who has sworn to overturn the Endangered Species Act. Born in Albuquerque, Jerry McNerney and his family moved to Pleasanton in 1990 for a job with US Windpower (Kenetech). In 1994 Jerry started working as an energy consultant for PG&E, FloWind, The Electric Power Research Institute, and other utility companies. He is now the CEO of a start-up company that will manufacture wind turbines and is in the process of raising venture capital for the business. During his career in wind energy, his work contributed to saving the equivalent of approximately 30,000,000 barrels of oil, or 8,300,000 tons of carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas, as well as other pollutants.
